PBB's Board of Directors includes professionals involved in addressing or researching the psychosocial impact of trauma and terror. In addition the Board includes members with experience in policy, finance and international humanitarian aid efforts.

PROF. ROXANE COHEN SILVER, Ph.D.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Dr. Silver is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and Social Behavior and the Department of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine. She is an international expert in the field of stress and coping and a leading researcher on the physical and psychological effects of fear and terror. For over 30 years, Dr. Silver has investigated the acute and long-term psychological, physical and social impact of traumatic life experiences, including personal losses such as physical disability, loss, and childhood sexual victimization, as well as larger collective events such as natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and other community disasters. She has also examined physical and psychological responses to traumatic events among refugees and immigrant populations. Dr. Silver was principal investigator of the only three-year national longitudinal study of psychological responses to the September 11th terrorist attacks against the U.S. Since 2003 she has served as an advisor to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, providing guidance on the psychological impact of terrorism and disasters. In 2007, Dr. Silver received the American Psychological Association’s Award for Distinguished Service to Psychological Science and in 2011 she will receive APA's Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest (Senior Career). Mark Entwistle

MARK ENTWISTLE

President of Chibas Consulting Inc.; Fellow of the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute

Mr. Entwistle served for sixteen years from in the Canadian diplomatic service. His Foreign Service career included assignments at the Canadian Embassies in Tel Aviv, Israel and Moscow, in the former USSR. He was the Press Secretary for former Canadian Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney. He is Director of the Canadian Urban Institute, a Toronto-based public policy think-tank that seeks to improve understanding of urban issues and policy-making and management in Canadian and world cities. Mr. Entwistle also served as the Canadian ambassador to Cuba from 1993-1997.

DR. JOHN FAIRBANK

Dr. Fairbank is Co-Director of the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress (NCCTS) sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Dr. Fairbank is a past president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) and serves on advisory boards for numerous organizations, including the Center for Child and Family Health in Durham, NC, and the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (NC-PTSD). Dr. Fairbank is a clinical psychologist, with over 25 years of research and clinical experience in the field of traumatic stress in children and adults.

DR. MERLE FRIEDMAN

SOUTH AFRICA

Clinical and Corporate Psychologist; Founder and Consultant, Psych-Action

Dr. Friedman is a Clinical Psychologist, and Clinical member of International Transactional Analysis Association (ITAA). She served on the board of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, is a co-founder and director of the South African Institute for Traumatic Stress, and was one of the founders of the Wits Trauma Clinic in South Africa. She was a member of the United States National Institute of Mental Health Violence and Traumatic Stress Working Group, and of the ISTSS International Working Group on Traumatic Stress. She has been a member of TRT (To Reflect and Trust) since 1997, engaging in issues of conflict and distress between groups of people. Dr. Friedman is also a corporate psychologist. She runs her own consultancy, Psych-Action, working with organisations in the areas of leadership, management, talent management, stress, traumatic stress, and various other aspects of corporate psychology. She is on Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee as a writer of King III, the Corporate Governance Report for South Africa. The focus of her current interest and research is on behavioural finance, aspects of stress and resilience in corporate life as well white collar crime prevention. She is an executive coach, working at senior levels in organisations and also trains and supervises executive coaches.

JACQUELINE M. JACOBSEN

Originally from Northern England, Jacqueline moved to Seattle where she spent 15 years pursuing careers in Nursing and Engineering. Jacqueline is currently the Vice President of Wealth Management for Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Seattle WA. Ms. Jacobsen has spent much of the last 20 years between Austin and Seattle, where she has worked with high net worth clients live more meaningfully by designing unique comprehensive wealth management strategies. As a vice president of wealth management, Ms. Jacobsen is committed to long-term relationships, and the ability to provide exceptional service by listening to her clients, understanding their needs, aspirations and concerns. Her practice is based on trust. Jacqueline has earned over 12 industry designations including the CFP®, CIMA®, and the CPWA® (Certified Private Wealth Advisor, which is the new designation issued from IMCA). In addition, she was an Adjunct Professor in the MBA program at St. Edwards University in Austin and Instructor for the CFP® program through the University of Texas. She is currently registered in 19 different states across the United States.

DR. YUVAL NERIA

Professor of Clinical Psychology, Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University; Director of the Trauma & PTSD Program, New York State Psychiatric Institute

Dr. Neria is a clinical psychologist, originally from Israel. His research has been focused on the mental health consequences of exposure to extreme traumatic events, with a particular focus on trauma survivors such as war veterans and people exposed to disasters and terrorism. Currently his group at Columbia is studying biomarkers of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), by using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to identify brain circuits underlying posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and to probe for the first time neural pathways of symptomatic improvement in response to PTSD treatments. Dr. Neria has authored more than 100 articles and book chapters in the area of trauma and PTSD, and edited three text books, including “9/11: mental health in the wake of terrorist attacks” (Cambridge University Press, 2006) and “The Mental Health Consequences of Disasters” (Cambridge University Press, 2009). He is the 2007 recipient of the Klerman NARSAD Award for outstanding Clinical Research, Honorable Mention.

DR. PAMELA RYAN OAM (CHAIR & CO-FOUNDER)

A licensed psychologist in her birth country, Australia, for almost 30 years, Dr. Ryan works globally, holding leadership positions in several international organizations. Her diverse experience as a psychologist in the organizational, political and psychosocial arenas, converges for her work with Psychology Beyond Borders. PBB was spawned from Issues Deliberation Australia/America (IDA), a global public policy think tank. Dr. Ryan was Managing Director of IDA from 1998 to 2011, when IDA merged with PBB. Dr. Ryan is also co-founder and Executive Chair of the Texas-based international Silverton Foundation. Dr. Ryan received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin with award winning research on the psychology of decision-making. This research, conducted in the US venture capital industry, accompanied over 15 years work as a psychologist consulting to organizations ranging from venture capital firms to high tech start-ups. Dr. Ryan maintains her strong ties with academia as a Research Fellow at the Hawke Research Institute, University of South Australia and the Centre for Australian Studies at the University of Texas. In 2008, Dr. Ryan was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of South Australia for her work in the public policy and political psychology fields. In 2009, she was inducted to the Women’s Honour Role of South Australia and listed in Who’s Who of Australian Women. In 2011, Dr. Ryan was awarded the prestigious Order of Australia Medal by the Australian Government for her contribution to the field of psychology and to Australia. DR. PATRICIA WATSON

Senior Education Specialist, National Center for PTSD; Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Dartmouth Medical School

Patricia Watson, Ph.D. is a senior educational specialist for the National Center for PTSD, Assistant Director of terrorism and disaster programs, National Center for Child Traumatic Stress, and Assistant Professor at Dartmouth Medical School in the Department of Psychiatry. She is a clinical psychologist with a focus on co-developing educational training materials in post-disaster, military, and first responder settings, such as the Psychological First Aid (PFA) Field Guide and the Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR) Manual, produced by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and the National Center for PTSD, as well as the Combat Operational Stress First Aid (COSFA) Field Guide, produced by the Department of Defense, the Defense Centers for Excellence, and the National Center for PTSD. She has additionally co-edited a number of books and articles on disaster behavioral health interventions, resilience and early intervention.
